Multiple Literacies & Goal Setting

Learning Outcome #2: Students will be able to demonstrate how they marshal/leverage their multiple literacies (e.g. speaking, listening, reading, multilingual writing, translating, multimodality, etc.) to support their writing processes.

Artifact: Stories in the Sky

Within this piece of writing I dived into the Greek culture and writing pieces, more specifically, a big part of their culture, Greek mythology. By analyzing the Myth of Hercules, I was able to see many themes and symbols that have been influential in writing pieces for centuries. A key example within this story being Hercules and his Twelve Laws of Labor illustrates the themes of perseverance and strength which are common themes seen within greek culture that they strive to have within themselves. They use the constellations as well within their storytelling and many of the constellations are a part of the myth of Hercules. Whilst analyzing Greek Mythology, I was able to develop a more nuanced and enhanced perspective that I think will help my own future writing pieces to be more complex and filled with depth. I like the positive and motivational feelings that Greek writing invokes on the reader and it makes me want to incorporate that into my writing as well to create a deeper connection and message within the audience as well. It shows the power that words can have on people's lives.

Artifact: Pre-Writing on the Seventh Night Poems

The next artifact was my pre-writing on the Seventh Night Poems. I analyzed each line, word for word of these poems. To further my knowledge, I studied the Japanese culture and their traditions. A big one being that they celebrated Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival. It is a holiday that has been going on forever in which they tell the legends of these star-crossed lovers who are separated by the Milky Way (river) and are only to allowed to meet but once a year on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month. This is the start of where I began to have a better understanding in analyzing linguistic patterns of various cultures, in this case, Japanese usage of literature. It gave me a better understanding of translating this form of writing and gave so much more of a deeper meaning behind the words. Originally when I read the poems, I saw it in a different light, but after analyzing it, you see it from a different perspective and it gives you a different feeling. I want to say that is the case with a lot of poems, is that there is a much deeper meaning behind the words than at first glance. Like for this story in example, you would originally believe that it is a couple who aren't able to see each other much preparing on a long hard journey but are excited and make the most of that one day. But it is a story of star-crossed lovers and holds so much more.
